What is menorrhagia?

Menorrhagia refers to excessive bleeding during menstruation and is experienced by many women at some point in their lives. Bleeding may be very heavy during a normal length period or in the form of prolonged bleeding every cycle. In young women who have begun menstruating in the last 18 months, menorrhagia is common due to irregular ovulation. Also, for women approaching the menopause, hormonal imbalance may contribute to heavier and irregular menstruation.
